                    FORTUNE BRANDS DECLARES REGULAR DIVIDEND


Lincolnshire, IL, April 30, 2002 - Fortune Brands, Inc. (NYSE: FO), a leading
consumer brands company, today declared a regular dividend of 25c per share on
the Common Stock, payable in cash on June 3, 2002, to stockholders of record at
the close of business May 15, 2002.

The company also declared a regular dividend of 66.75c per share on the $2.67 
Convertible Preferred Stock, payable in cash on June 10, 2002, to stockholders 
of record at the close of business May 15, 2002.
