- Program provides eye exams and care for rural Indians HYDERABAD,
India, March 11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Satyam Computer Services
Limited, (NYSE:SAY) a leading global consulting and information
technology services provider, announced today that it was honored,
along with the LV Prasad Eye Institute, with a Consumer Health
World Award for a tele-ophthalmology program, which provides expert
and affordable eye care to Indian villages. The Consumer Health
World Awards recognize excellence and advancement in health
promotion, plan design, connected care and medical travel. The
awards, which were announced at a Health Care Globalization Summit
ceremony in Arlington, Va., honor new initiatives, projects and
programs making a difference in the healthcare industry. "The
Consumer Health World Awards enable leading organizations to share
advances in health, wellness and technology, as well as
efficiencies in healthcare delivery," said Wendy Borow-Johnson, the
co-chair of the Consumer Health World Awards and president of BOOMj
Inc. "Winners provide programs and applications with measurable
outcomes for their constituencies -- programs and applications that
can be replicated throughout the industry -- from IT for
administrative efficiencies and electronic medical records, to
wellness and prevention products and services, to marketing of
global health centers of excellence, and much more."
Tele-ophthalmology is the virtual delivery of vision impairment
diagnosis from doctors in large cities to remote areas. The
technology enables ophthalmologists and trained vision technicians
from Hyderabad's LV Prasad Eye Institute to diagnose patients in
remote locations by virtually viewing their eyelids, conjunctivas,
corneas, anterior chambers, irises, pupil reactions and lenses.
When required, patients are referred for further tele-ophthalmology
services or to secondary eye care centers, where they can receive
prescriptions or other treatment. Because most of the patients who
receive tele-ophthalmology treatment would not otherwise ever have
access to an eye doctor, the program is transforming the way care
is made available to rural Indians. LVPEI professionals use a video
slit lamp, a high-end camera that provides a stereoscopic view of
the eye. These virtual eye exams include patient registration,
vision screening, refractive examination, a real-time slit lamp
examination, consultation and advice. "While we have conducted a
successful proof-of-concept at this stage, we are confident this
program will be especially effective because of what we have
learned from similar programs we have pioneered, such as Tele-EKG,"
said Kishore Rachapudi, Global Head, Satyam Healthcare and Life
Sciences. "We are familiar with the customs and expectations of
rural people, and know how to optimize programs designed to provide
healthcare basics for them. Additionally, the pilot program in the
village of Kallakuru was exceptional, and resulted in enhanced
vision for many people who would otherwise never have had their
eyesight evaluated." Satyam, through the Satyam Foundation, is
