Gateway Secures a $2.7 Million Contract From the U.S. Navy to
Provide Products and Services to Personnel Worldwide Gateway to
Provide Desktop, Notebooks, Servers and Other Products for Naval
Ships and Submarines IRVINE, Calif., July 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/
-- Gateway, the nation's third-largest PC vendor, was awarded a
$2.7 million contract to provide products and services to the
United States Navy's Morale, Recreation and Welfare (MRW) Division.
Gateway is supplying more than 1,100 E-6300 desktops with displays,
100 M460E notebooks, 90 9210 SCSI servers, and over 600 other
products, including CD towers, scanners, color printers and network
switches for sailors worldwide. The products are primarily used in
more than 300 naval ships and submarine libraries for sailors to
communicate with friends and family via email and video
conferencing, as well as for recreation activities such as gaming
and surfing the Internet. Additionally, the Navy offers a Navy
College Program for Afloat College Education (NCPACE) that offers
both academic skills classes and college courses to sailors. They
are able to take these accredited courses online while on sea duty
assignments, preparing them for personal and professional growth.
"We are proud that our products are being used to aide in the
well-being of the U.S. Navy's personnel through their MRW
division," said Vin Riera, vice president of government sales,
Gateway. "We are very pleased to provide powerful solutions to keep
personnel in touch with loved ones while they are serving our
country." Gateway was able to meet the U.S. Navy's unique operating
system requirements and custom configure all of its desktops,
notebooks and servers. Providing this solution is critical to the
Department of Defense (DOD) because changing operating system
platforms frequently would require thousands of proprietary
applications to be rewritten. United States Navy's Morale, Welfare
and Recreation Division The Navy's Morale, Welfare and Recreation
Division administers a varied program of recreation, social and
community support activities for U.S. Navy facilities worldwide.
The programs provide active-duty, reserve and retired Navy
personnel and their families with quality support and recreational
services that contribute to the retention, readiness, mental,
physical and emotional well-being of the sailors. Additionally, the
MWR provides shipboard libraries with computers for recreation and
communication. The U.S. Navy contract is one of a series of recent
customer wins for Gateway's Professional Business segments. Other
customers include the state of California and the U.S. Air Force.
