The FTSE is currently down 23.90 points as the falling dollar continues to have an adverse effect even though oil prices have eased. The recent attack on the US Consulate in Jeddah could also be having a negative effect. In Asian markets, the Hang Seng has managed to stay in positive territory and is up 0.32%. The BSE Sensex ended flat after being able to recoup from losses during the morning session. News of reforms in the banking sector pushed shares of that sector up. It could be a very quiet day today, as there really isn't anything scheduled that has the potential to move the markets very much. There is no major economic news and only a handful of significant earnings reports. The news of the attack on the US consulate in Jeddah can be expected to play a part in today's trading action. It is days like these when you least expect a move -- one could happen. Plus on Thursday and Friday we didn't see much movement, so expect some action any day now. But a concerted effort by the Indian government means it is worthwhile looking for Indian stocks poised to run. India's foreign trade has increased 10% from last year, and that number is relatively small compared to predicted future growth. With the rupee at a low point, many American companies are much less reluctant to do business with Indian companies as opposed to their counterparts in Korea and Taiwan, whose currencies are very strong against the dollar. Combined with the outsourcing of tech service jobs from the U.S. to India and the strength of Indian software companies, trade between the two nations is rising and shows no sign of stopping. Even more important is the alliance India is poised to make with the Association of SouthEast Asian Nations (ASEAN). ASEAN, which includes ten Asian nations and is forming pacts with 7 others, is establishing the world's largest free trade bloc. Ties with ASEAN not only strengthen India's trade prospects, but also add infrastructure support. According to the International Monetary Fund, India's GDP rose 6.7% in 2004, compared with 6.4% growth in 2003. And a further boost could come as companies such as Nokia and Microsoft develop further, and set up facilities in India. It's odd to consider a country of India's size as an "emerging market," but the numbers suggest India is only just starting its growth. India's markets are currently outperforming those of better-developed China, riding the strong performance of India's banks and software companies, and there are companies in several sectors apparently poised for rapid growth. With economic expansion and the recent signing of the "ASEAN-India Partnership for Peace, Progress and Shared Prosperity," those who look for opportunities in India could certainly be rewarded.
