AMERICAN SHARED HOSPITAL SERVICES (NYSE MKT:AMS), a
leading provider of turnkey technology solutions for advanced
radiosurgical and radiation therapy services, announced today that
physicians have begun treating patients with the MEVION S250 proton
therapy system AMS supplied to The Marjorie and Leonard Williams
Center for Proton Therapy at UF Health Cancer Center-Orlando Health
in Florida.
AMS Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Ernest A. Bates, M.D.,
said, "This first proton treatment at The Marjorie and Leonard
Williams Center for Proton Therapy at UF Health Cancer
Center-Orlando Health is the culmination of years of hard work and
dedication by all of us at AMS to make our first proton center a
reality. We congratulate the proton therapy team at UF Health
Cancer Center-Orlando Health on achieving this milestone.
"Proton therapy is an external-beam radiation therapy
technique similar to conventional high energy X-rays. The
difference is that protons are heavy charged particles that
deposit radiation in a targeted manner--when they reach a specific
depth, protons deposit their energy and then stop, leaving
virtually no energy beyond that depth. The depth is precisely
controlled by changing the energy of the protons, thus allowing
physicians to precisely tailor the proton dose to the specific
depth and shape of the tumor, and thereby greatly reducing the dose
to surrounding healthy tissue. Only 21 proton centers are in
operation in the U.S. today. But with the increasing awareness
among physicians and patients of proton therapy's advantages in the
treatment of certain cancers, we at AMS look forward to developing
many additional proton centers at hospitals around the country in
the years to come."
The Marjorie and Leonard Williams Center for Proton Therapy is
housed in a new, 15,000 square foot facility consisting of three
floors--two above ground and one underground--to accommodate the
MEVION S250 superconducting synchrocyclotron proton
accelerator.
