Deutsche Post AG (DPW.XE) said Thursday that it is constructing a new parcel center in Ludwigsfelde, just outside of Berlin.

The new center will have a sorting capacity of approximately 50,000 shipments an hour, the German logistics company said, and will provide additional support to existing centers in Ruedersdorf and Boernicke.

A purchase agreement for the property has already been signed with the city of Ludwigsfelde, Deutsche Post said, and the property occupies approximately 68 hectares in an area approximately 11 kilometers from the southern city limits of Berlin. The property is currently being developed, Deutsche Post said, with an eye to starting construction this summer.

The new parcel center is scheduled to become operational in 2020, the company said, and up to 600 new jobs will created.

Deutsche Post already has a sorting capacity of more than 1 million parcels an hour across its 34 parcel centers, it said, and expects average annual parcel growth of between 5% and 7% until 2020.
