Brazil's mobile-phone subscriptions increased to 231.6 million in October, up 1.89% from September, according to figures released over the weekend by telecommunications regulator Anatel.

New subscriptions in October totaled 4.3 million.

Telecomunicacoes de Sao Paulo SA (VIV), also known as Vivo, remained the market leader in October with a 29.61% share. Vivo is controlled by Spain's Telefonica SA (TEF).

TIM Participacoes SA (TCSL4.BR) was second with a 26% share of the market. TIM is the local unit of Telecom Italia SpA (TIT.MI).

Claro, the local unit of Mexico's America Movil SA (AMX.MX), ranked third with 25.2% of the market.

In fourth-place, mobile-phone operator Tele Norte Leste SA (TNE, TNLP4.BR), or Oi, captured 18.86% of the market.
