The number of mobile phones in circulation in Brazil rose to 183.7 million in May, up 1.6% from the month before, according to figures released Thursday by telecommunications regulator Anatel.

Net additions totaled 2.95 million in May, up from 1.66 million in April.

Vivo Participacoes SA (VIV, VIVO4.BR) maintained market leadership with a 30.25% share of subscriptions, up slightly from 30.14% in April. Vivo is jointly owned by Spain's Telefonica SA (TEF, TEF.MC) and Portugal Telecom SGPS SA (PT, PTC.LB).

Claro, the local unit of Mexico's America Movil SA (AMX.MX, AMOV), was second with a 25.41% share, down from 25.47% in April.

TIM Participacoes (TSU, TCSL4.BR) was in third place with 23.84%, up from 23.72%. TIM is the local unit of Telecom Italia SpA (TIA, TIT.MI).

Fourth-place mobile-phone operator Oi (TNE, TNLP4.BR) registered a share of 20.15%, down from 20.30% the month before.
