Northrop Grumman Corp. said Thursday it received a contract from the U.S. Space Force "to develop a modernized strategic communications space segment with enhanced resilience and cybersecurity capabilities" as part of the Evolved Strategic SATCOM, or ESS, program.

The company said it will deliver a preliminary design for the ESS space segment as well as a ground-based demonstration during the rapid prototyping phase.

The ESS program will interoperate with the Space Force's existing Advanced Extremely High Frequency system, a series of communication satellites operated by the Space Force, and will eventually replace that system, the company said.
