Harris Corporation Forms Team to Pursue National Archives and
Records Administration Program MELBOURNE, Fla. and WASHINGTON, Feb.
11 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Harris Corporation , a leader in
large-volume, high-speed information processing technology, has
formed a team to compete for a major program to design, develop and
operate the Electronic Record Archives (ERA) for the U.S. National
Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The ERA system will
enable NARA to authentically preserve and provide access to
electronic archival records, free from dependency on any specific
hardware or software. "This is a very exciting opportunity for
Harris to apply its proven capabilities in large-volume data
processing, archiving, access, ingest, and distributed Web-based
technology," said Al Dukes, president, Civil Programs business
unit, Harris Government Communications Systems Division (GCSD). "We
are pleased to be participating in this challenging initiative and
look forward to furthering a long-term relationship with NARA."
Harris will act as the prime systems integrator for the program,
leading a team that will develop, integrate, deploy and operate the
total archiving solution with NARA. The other team members are
Booz, Allen and Hamilton; Vredenburg, an AMS Company; and
Information Manufacturing Corporation. A significant portion of the
Harris ERA team will operate in close proximity to NARA from a new
Harris facility in Silver Spring, Maryland, which opened last
month. Once complete, theERA will be able to accept any type of
electronic record, including federal, presidential, and other
records of significant historical value that are created using any
kind of application on any computing platform, and will be able to
provide search and retrieval to anyone with an interest and a legal
right of access. NARA is scheduled to award the Analysis and Design
phase of the ERA contract to one or more companies in June 2004.
Following a nine-month design competition, the winner is expected
to be announced in June 2005. In addition to system development and
design, the ultimate winner will also provide operations and
management services for the program into the next decade. Harris
GCSD, one of five divisions within Harris Corporation, conducts
advanced research studies, develops prototypes, and produces and
supports state-of-the-art, assured communications(TM) and
information solutions that solve the mission-critical challenges of
its military and government customers, while serving as the
technology base for the company's diverse commercial businesses.
