ConAgra Foods Inc. (CAG) plans to significantly reduce
packaging, water, greenhouse gas and solid waste by 2015 as the
food maker tries to become more environmentally conscious.
In the next five years, ConAgra, which makes packaged food such
as Healthy Choice and Hunt's, intends to reduce packaging by 10%
and greenhouse gas emissions by 20% compared with 2008 levels. The
company also expects to use 15% less water and divert solid waste
from landfills by a minimum of 75%.
"We've set these new transparent sustainability goals to ensure
we are a leader in continuously improving the way we make food, and
to continue to create more awareness for what others can do to
improve as well," said Chief Executive Gary Rodkin.
The company has been working toward reducing carbon emissions,
eliminating landfill waste and water conservation since 2007.
ConAgra's earnings rose 19% in the most recent quarter as the
company benefited during recession when consumers eat more meals at
home rather than out.
Shares climbed 2 cents to $25.21 in recent trading and are up
9.4% so far this year.
