Overseas markets are displaying a mixed picture this morning as
only 8 out of 15 markets that we track are looking strong. Though
the Nikkei dipped into the red before the holiday, the Hang Seng is
up by 0.08%. The FTSE has headed lower after making 39-month highs
yesterday. However, lower crude oil prices are offering much needed
relief to fuel dependant companies like British Airways. The August
contract on sweet crude oil plunged 3.68 percent in trading
yesterday as traders showed their relief that Hurricane Emily's
projected westward path across the Caribbean is likely to track to
the south of oil and natural-gas production facilities in the Gulf
of Mexico. The contract finished the session below its 10-day and
20-day moving averages for the first time since June 30. Be

OPPORTUNITIES The Ifo Institute, one of Germany's leading economic
groups, just sliced its economic growth forecast for this year from
the 1.2% figure it projected back in December to just 0.8%. It
reserved the 1.2% number for next year instead, saying that this
year's lack of growth is largely due to a lack of investment. In
addition, factory orders and exports are declining, while
unemployment continues to hover close to postwar highs. However,
one of Germany's other six leading economic institutes, HWWI,
boldly predicts a doubling of economic growth next year after the
country holds early elections in September. Current polls suggest
that, with a 15% lead, Angela Merkel's opposition Christian
Democratic Union Party will easily force current Chancellor Gerhard
Schroeder and his Social Democratic Party out of office in the
elections. This isn't surprising, considering Schroeder has seen
his approval rating consistently sink following his failed pledge
to reduce unemployment - a factor that has led to desperately weak
consumer spending. The HWWI believes that a new government would
inject the German economy with fresh impetus and lead to a spell of
heightened domestic spending. But it warns that "painfully high"
oil prices pose a threat to any kind of GDP growth forecast. That
makes it vital that export growth, which has so far propped up the
economy admirably, adheres to its projection of 4.5% this year and
4.8% in 2006. On a related Eurozone theme, HSBC just released a
report, stating that some countries might find it more beneficial
to abandon the single currency and revert back to their original
tender. The bank cites increasing strain caused by a "one-size
fits-all" monetary policy from the ECB on countries like Germany,
Italy and Holland. Having control of its interest rate policy would
undoubtedly help Germany, while other countries might benefit from
having their debt in their own currency, not the euro. Read more
