--The chief executive of Barclays says he is hopeful that the "powers that be" will avoid trade wars, the FT reports.

--"I just hope that . . . we don't find people putting up barriers, I think that would be a reversal of a global economic policy which has served the world very well since World War II," said Barclays Chief Executive Jes Staley, according to the FT.

--Mr. Staley's comments come as the U.S. and China have imposed tariffs on each other's exports.
