Sam’s Club awards nearly $25,000 in grants to local organizations

The newest Sam’s Club in Pennsylvania will open its doors Thursday, Sept. 14, at 261 Wilson Ave. in Hanover. The public is invited to join the celebration, which kicks off with a grand opening ceremony at 8 a.m.

New club features

Located in the Gateway Hanover Shopping Center, the Hanover club will be one of the first locations in the northeast to offer the fresh new look and feel of Sam’s Club. New features include a fresh island that offers organic and grass-fed beef, an expanded seafood section, and fresh sushi made daily. The focus on fresh carries throughout the dairy and produce departments with large walk-in coolers designed to keep products as fresh as possible. An additional feature members will experience is the café with self-order kiosks, expanded seating with charging stations and an updated menu that includes premium coffee, made-to-order sandwiches, and smoothies. Members can also continue to count on Sam’s Club for their health and wellness needs. The new club will provide pharmacy services as well as a hearing center and optical department.

Shopping made simple

Members of the Hanover club can utilize the company’s award-winning smartphone app called Scan & Go, which allows users the option of scanning their items while they shop and simply paying on their phone. The Hanover club will also offer the drive-thru convenience of Club Pickup - a service for members who prefer to place an online order and pick their merchandise up at a scheduled time.

Commitment to community

As part of the grand opening festivities, Sam’s Club will be awarding nearly $25,000 in grants to several local nonprofit organizations. The Hanover club associates have already put in over 300 hours of volunteer work prior to the grand opening and are excited to continue to serve their community not just inside the club, but outside it as well.

“We are so excited to be able to help local organizations that support our community,” said Hanover Club Manager Justin Herr. “I am so proud of the great team we have in place that is passionate about giving back and serving our members.”

Sam’s Club locations across the Northeast region have also come together to raise $400,000 for the Special Olympics, over $100,000 of that total came from the state of Pennsylvania. The check will be presented to the Special Olympics at the Hanover grand opening ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 14.

Sam’s Club is also proud to support small business owners through the company’s Road Show program. This consignment-based program provides local, regional, and national entrepreneurs the chance to set up shop inside Sam’s Club while providing members access to exciting and one-of-a-kind products. Hanover’s grand opening will feature several local products including Kunzler Meats quality hot dogs and bacon and Hanover Foods fresh canned vegetables. Members will also enjoy samples of Snyder’s of Hanover pretzels, UTZ potato chips and Chef Shamy Gourmet Butters. Entrepreneurs interested in participating in future Road Shows should contact their local Sam’s Club manager for more details.

Grand opening ceremony to feature local officials, special events

Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce President Gary Laird will be among those attending Thursday’s grand opening ceremony. Gettysburg High School ROTC will present the colors and the Hanover High School chorus will perform the national anthem. Other groups providing entertainment during the ceremony include the Hanover High School marching band and cheerleaders.

To add to the excitement former Penn State running back, Consensus All-American, Rose Bowl MVP, and the 1995 no. 1 overall draft pick, Ki-Jana Carter will be signing autographs for fans on grand opening day from 2 to 4 p.m. His appearance is made possible by Procter & Gamble.
