Fox's "Empire" is still reigning supreme.
Two episodes into its second season, the show is not only
pulling in strong TV ratings. It's also racking up the most online
chatter, according to data from digital marketing firm Amobee Brand
Intelligence.
"Empire," which began its second season on Sept. 23, generated
more tweets and digital content engagement in September than any
other TV show, Amobee's data show.
There were nearly 3.3 million tweets about the music industry
drama last month, far ahead of the second-most tweeted about show,
Fox's "Scream Queens," which had nearly 1.7 million tweets. ABC's
"Scandal" came in third with 1.4 million tweets, followed by ABC's
"Grey's Anatomy" and "Dancing with the Stars" with roughly 531,000
and 506,000 mentions, respectively, according to Amobee.
"Empire" has been a big hit for Fox and brought in 16.2 million
total viewers for its season premiere last month, up more than 30%
from last season's average viewership in the key 18-to-49 age
group.
(Fox owner 21st Century Fox was until mid-2013 a part of the
same company as News Corp, which owns The Wall Street Journal.)
Amobee also measures digital content engagement, which analyzes
the content users are interacting with across more than 600,000
sites on mobile, video, web and social platforms. "Empire" also led
the TV pack in September based on engagement.
NBC's "The Voice," CBS's "Survivor," AMC's "The Walking Dead"
and HBO's "Game of Thrones" rounded out the top five TV shows with
the most digital content engagement last month. "The Walking Dead"
and "Game of Thrones" didn't air new episodes in September. Amobee
said the digital engagement around those shows was dominated by
discussion around the prior season's cliffhangers.
