Osmetech BV Analyser matches diagnostic test "gold
standard"
In April 2000, the Board of Osmetech announced that,
following strong results from an initial study at South
Manchester University hospital, a large proof of concept
study was to be undertaken at St George's Hospital Medical
School, London, to confirm the potential of Osmetech's Microbial
Analyser in detecting Bacterial Vaginosis ("BV").
The Board is delighted to announce that the preliminary
results of a large study of 1038 patients, conducted by
Dr Phillip Hay, one of the world's leading BV physicians,
suggests that the BV Analyser matches the diagnostic
performance of the existing "gold standard" diagnostic
test.
The Board believes that this is a major step forward in
the diagnosis of BV. The Osmetech Microbial Analyser is
significantly faster, more objective and less labour
intensive than the existing "gold standard".
Dr Wang Chong, Osmetech's Chief Executive, commented,
"This represents a significant breakthrough for Osmetech
and a major development in the diagnosis and treatment of
BV worldwide, enabling the physician to make a point of
care diagnosis and, therefore, treatment decision within
10 minutes.
"BV has a prevalence rate of around 20% and accounts for
10 million gynaecological visits in the US each year. It
is a risk factor for a large number of obstetric,
gynaecological and neonatal complications, including
miscarriage, preterm birth, pelvic inflammatory disease
and HIV.
"We shall now be moving the BV Analyser forward for FDA
approval and expect to commence FDA clinical trials
within the next few months."
