Norwich Union is today issuing the following press release.  

"BARCLAYS AND NORWICH UNION SIGN NEW FIVE YEAR INSURANCE DEAL

Barclays Bank and Norwich Union have signed an agreement to extend their
existing relationship which was established in March 1996.

Under the agreement, Norwich Union is appointed as Barclays preferred supplier
of personal general insurance products and the related claims service for a
further five and a half years.

"The signing of this deal marks a further step forward in a strategic
development of our general insurance business.  Our working arrangement with
Norwich Union has been excellent over the past 12 months and we have now
decided to secure the benefits to our customers of this arrangement for a
further period to 2003," said Bob Drench, Managing Director of Barclays
Insurance Services.

Patrick Snowball, Managing Director of Norwich Union's general insurance
operation said: "This is confirmation that we have been able to deliver what
we promised at the outset - a first class service".

"One of the major reasons for Barclays decision is the success of the
award-winning total incident management concept which supports the Barclays
HomeHelp round-the-clock claims and assistance service.  We believe it is the
best in the insurance market".  

Bob Drench continued: "Customer reaction to the Barclays HomeHelp service has
been very positive with 330,000 policyholders now benefiting from it through
their household insurance.  The service is also available to our motor
insurance customers as Barclays MotorHelp."

"Our aim is now to broaden the range of quality products available to our
customers and as a first stage in this we are developing a number of value for
money healthcare products which will become available in early 1998."
