KBC ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES PLC
17th March 1999
KBC Advanced Technologies plc
Licensing Agreement with OSI
KBC Advanced Technologies plc ("KBC" or "the Group") and OSI
Software Inc. ("OSI"), a privately owned US software company,
are pleased to announce an agreement in principle under which
OSI will license, further develop, and market KBC's Sigmafine
software technology.
KBC is a leading consultant to the oil refining industry and,
through its Sigmafine software, is the recognised market
leader in mass balance, data reconciliation, and yield
accounting technology, with over 100 installations at
refineries throughout the world.
During 1998 the Group instituted a review of its software
business which highlighted that KBC's core strength lies in
its proprietary technology, such as Sigmafine, rather than the
software environment in which the models reside. It was
concluded, therefore, that the Group should seek to work with
partners whose strengths in software complement those of KBC.
OSI is the supplier of PI, the market leading data historian,
which is currently used in over 1,500 refineries and other
process industry facilities worldwide. Under this agreement,
KBC will provide OSI with an exclusive licence to further
develop, sell and support its Sigmafine technology. OSI has
agreed to make a significant investment to increase the
functionality of Sigmafine, which has potential applications
in a number of other process industries that KBC does not
currently serve. The Group will receive a royalty stream from
future Sigmafine sales, maintenance, support and installation
over the next ten years and will continue to use Sigmafine in
its consulting practice.
This agreement with OSI follows the announcement in December
1998 that KBC had established a relationship with Hyprotech
Ltd, a subsidiary of AEA Technology plc, to cross-license
certain of its other refinery-wide simulation technology and
refinery process models.
Michael Press, Chairman, KBC Advanced Technologies plc,
commented: "I am delighted to announce that we have reached an
agreement with OSI which will accelerate the development of
Sigmafine as well as providing a distribution base into other
process industries. This represents a further step in our
strategy of working with outside partners that complement our
strengths, ensuring KBC remains a leading provider of process
technology to the refining industry."
