Since long before The Big Bang Theory made science geeks cool,
K.S. Wiswell, a Kaplan Test Prep instructor and comedy writer in
Los Angeles, has been a Sheldon trying to navigate a world of
Pennys. From a self-professed übernerd comes “Full-Frontal
Nerdity,” a collection of personal essays about applying all that
“useless” book learning from school to the more practical pursuits
of life, love, and releasing your inner quantum.

What does a centuries-old math problem have to teach us about a
woman’s biological clock and the pressure to marry? How is the
history of Leap Day a cautionary tale about traditional gender
roles and asserting power? How can Bayesian reasoning stop us from
writing off a potential partner too early or letting a dud stick
around too long? How can we learn to love our quirks, and, by doing
so, release our inner quantum? In a series of short, light-hearted
pieces, Wiswell’s new book, “Full-Frontal Nerdity,” will introduce
readers to some fascinating nerdy concepts, explore the more
practical lessons to be gleaned from those subjects, and provide a
newfound depth of understanding about living, loving, and simply
being in a humorously complex world.
The personal essays of “Full-Frontal Nerdity” also explore the
struggles of being a thinking adult in an often-irrational world.
The author takes inspiration from the many subjects that have
sparked her curiosity over the years – statistics, mythology,
physics, poetry, and even the history of pi – to gain insight into
the everyday mysteries of living.
“Smart is sexy, but it can be really hard to believe that
sometimes. I want to show people the hard-earned solace that comes
from learning to love – and live with – your brain,” says
Wiswell.
After graduating Harvard University with a degree in English
Literature, she joined the corporate world (“to ward off the debt
collectors,” she said), before moving to the West Coast and joining
the famed improvisational comedy enterprise Second City. She then
became the head writer of a popular, mostly-female sketch comedy
troupe and went on to write screenplays, specializing in “rom coms
that don’t treat women like idiots,” as she describes.
The book is priced at $12.99 and available for purchase on
Amazon. An e-version will soon be available for $9.99.
