Tasty Baking Co. Creates Recipe for Success by Cutting Technology Costs With New Gateway Hardware Gateway Servers and Storage Win 'Bake Off' POWAY, Calif., May 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Philadelphia-based Tasty Baking Co. may hit customers' sweet spots with its Tastykake pies, cookies and cakes. But the icing on the cake was trimming six figures out of the company's IT costs by selecting server and storage technology from Gateway, Inc. (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20020930/LAM050LOGO ) Gateway recently won a technology "bake off" between several competing vendors to determine the best server and storage vendor to upgrade Tasty Baking's IT infrastructure. In winning the overall bid, Gateway proved its Microsoft Windows- and Intel-based server and storage solutions could easily power Tasty Baking's new enterprise resource planning (ERP) initiative as well as other enterprise data center applications at the lowest cost point. Using Gateway four-way 995 servers, dual-processor 975 servers, ultra-thin 955 servers, a Hitachi SAN and Gateway-branded rack cabinet, Tasty Baking centralized its disk storage and consolidated its IT resources into a manageable, expandable infrastructure. In addition, the company migrated from both older Wintel and UNIX operating systems to Microsoft Windows Server 2003, while also upgrading the company email system to Microsoft Exchange 5.0. Gateway met Tasty Baking's tight deadline and performed the infrastructure migration in less than two weeks. The company's data center was then ready to handle the applications' projects to begin overhauling the company's ERP system and other related initiatives. Tasty Baking, which has annual sales of $250 million, was ultimately able to trim six figures out of its IT budget due to the Gateway project. "Although we had already standardized on Gateway E-Series desktops, we weren't aware of Gateway's server and storage technology and were also unsure whether a Windows-Intel solution could support our ERP initiative," said Autumn Bayles, CIO, Tasty Baking Co. "But Gateway delivered a superior server and storage portfolio that met all our needs, enabling us to do a lot more for less money and still expand as we continue our ERP rollout." "This is the year of migration for businesses, and Tasty Baking is at the forefront of a trend among companies moving from legacy UNIX environments to Windows-Intel infrastructures," said Scott Weinbrandt, senior vice president of Gateway's Professional Division. "We're pleased to be able to deliver a portfolio of business solutions to customers that help them save money, reduce support costs and maintain business continuity."
