Equinor ASA said Tuesday that it has awarded an 8 billion Norwegian kroner ($792.5 million) contract to Aibel for modification work at the Hammerfest liquefied natural gas plant.

The contract is an option on the front-end engineering and design contract awarded to Aibel in September 2020, and includes engineering, procurement, construction and installation of two new processing modules.

Aibel will also build a new receiving station for power from shore and carry out integration work at the plant, Equinor said.

The modifications are part of the Snohvit Future project, which aims to cut emissions and extend the life of the Snohvit gas field in the Barents Sea. Gas from Snohvit is piped to the Hammerfest plant and the upgrades announced Tuesday form part of investments totaling NOK13.2 billion to ensure continued operation of the plant toward 2050.

Engineering and design work starts immediately, with most of the work carried out between 2024 and 2026, subject to governmental approval, it added.
