American Electric Power Co. on Wednesday said it designated Financial Chief Julie Sloat to succeed Nicholas Akins at the helm of the utility holding company.

The Columbus, Ohio, company said it named Ms. Sloat to the additional post of president, effective immediately, and said she would succeed Mr. Akins as chief executive on Jan. 1, 2023.

AEP said Mr. Akins, who has been president and CEO since 2011 and chairman since 2014, would become executive chairman and would remain an executive and officer of the company.

Ms. Sloat, 53 years old, joined AEP in 1999 and has been executive vice president and chief financial officer since January 2021.

AEP said it expects to name a new chief financial officer by the end of the year.
