U.S. Chamber of Commerce awards Aflac and the Aflac Cancer Center for partnering in the fight against pediatric cancer. COLUMBUS, Ga., Nov. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Last night, the relationship that started over ten years ago between Aflac and the Aflac Cancer Center and Blood Disorders Service at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta was honored with a U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Corporate Citizenship Award. During a prestigious ceremony hosted by television personality, Ed McMahon in Washington, D.C., Aflac and the Aflac Cancer Center took home the award in the partnership category for their efforts supporting pediatric cancer research and treatment. The Partnership Award recognizes a company and a charitable organization that have exemplified cooperative success in addressing an important social issue. Organized by the Business Civic Leadership Center (BCLC), the partnership prize is a people's choice award determined by a public online vote. Nearly 24,000 voters cast ballots between September 6 and October 5 selecting Aflac and the Aflac Cancer Center as winners in this category. "We are especially proud to be recognized for our long-standing relationship with The Aflac Cancer Center," said Dan Amos, Aflac's Chairman and CEO. "We are grateful to everyone who voted for us in the partnership category and hope they too will be inspired to support this worthy cause." In researching companies for the award, the BCLC in conjunction with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce reviewed over 125 written nominations to select five finalists. Online voters then selected the winner from the top-five nominees. "Business-nonprofit partnerships are a significant force for good in the U.S.," said BCLC Executive Director Stephen Jordan. "Aflac's commitment to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is inspiring, and this is our way of thanking both organizations for the difference they make in the lives of our nation's children and calling attention to their important work." Since 1995, Aflac along with its employees and sales associates have contributed over $36 million to the Aflac Cancer Center. "The partnership between Aflac and the Aflac Cancer Center is unparalleled. Aflac's desire to realize a cure for childhood cancer and blood disorders is as strong as that of our researchers, clinicians and patient families. This desire is embraced by their employees and sales force. Aflac is a true champion for childhood cancer and blood disorders," stated Diane Vaughn, Senior Development Officer for Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. The BCLC's Corporate Citizenship Awards showcases a total of six businesses, trade associations, chambers of commerce and partner organizations for demonstrating ethical leadership and corporate stewardship and for making a positive difference in society. In addition to the Partnership Award, the International Community Service Award, the U.S. Community Service Award and the Corporate Stewardship Award for Small, Midsize and Large Business, were presented during the gala.
