MARKET OVERVIEW Overseas trading is in a sorry state today, with just one of the 15 foreign markets that we track in positive territory, and the cumulative average return is negative 0.516 percent. The Asian markets tumbled, with the Nikkei down 2.7 percent. In Europe, the French CAC40 is currently down 0.7 percent, and the German DAX and the FTSE 100 are both down 0.2 percent. The Danish market, which has been falling for the past few days, slipped another 0.3 percent. April-dated gold saw its largest one-day plunge on record today, dropping $19.50 lower to $554.80 an ounce, a loss of 3.4 percent. During trading, gold dropped as low as $553.70 an ounce, its lowest intraday level since January 19. Analysts disagree whether the metal had established a "significant top" or if today's action was a "temporary setback." As a result of this decline, gold indices were hit rather hard. The AMEX Gold BUGS Index, the CBOE Gold Index, and the Philadelphia Gold and Silver Index all dropped on the day. March silver fell 34.8 cents on the day, ending at $9.41 an ounce. Ahead of today's inventory reports, oil fell to its lowest level of the year. This drop indicates that most traders believe the U.S. government will report increases in crude and gasoline inventories for the past week tomorrow. The March crude contract dropped $2.02 on the day, finishing at $63.09 per barrel, slightly higher from the intraday low of $63 per barrel. Today's close was the lowest for crude since December 30. In after-hours action, black gold is trading lower. For a second straight day natural-gas futures dropped, finishing at $7.858 per million British Thermal Units, the lowest price since May 31. Natural gas has been driven lower by the belief that a frigid February won't be enough to drive prices much higher.
