IHS (NYSE: IHS), the leading global source of information and analysis, today announced that 14 top public and private organizations from around the world have been honored with IHS SPECTRUM Excellence Awards for 2011 in recognition of their outstanding use of advanced information technology to achieve their environmental, health, safety compliance and sustainability (EHS&S) business goals.

The winning organizations were celebrated at a gala awards banquet at IHS SPECTRUM 2011, the EHS&S software user conference, on the evening of Tuesday, May 17 in Austin, Texas. Established in 2006, the IHS SPECTRUM Excellence Awards have recognized dozens of organizations over the years for their proven success reducing risks, increasing efficiency and supporting growth.

The 2011 IHS SPECTRUM Excellence Award winners (and a sampling of their achievements) include:

  • Asian Paints – India's largest paint producer replaced hundreds of standalone/manual systems with a centralized EHS&S platform – automating tens of thousands of environmental audit processes, saving significant man-hours each month on safety management, and supporting a 54 percent reduction in water use.
  • Cenovus Energy – This Canadian oil and gas company is now leveraging a single integrated enterprise system to manage emissions data across more than 1,000 facilities for environmental compliance, greenhouse gas and energy efficiency management.
  • CITGO – The U.S.-based oil and gas company reduced multiple business processes for efficiency and consistency and is moving forward with an improved management of change process by using a centralized health, safety, security and environmental system.
  • Cummins Inc. – This global diesel engine manufacturer improved chemical management across72 sites worldwide and increased the efficiency of its REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) compliance program with a centralized, web-based system that identifies prohibited chemicals from a database of more than 16,000 safety data sheets (SDSs).
  • Duke Energy, the largest utility in the U.S., replaced more than 60 legacy systems and is managing more than 1 million chemical inventory records with a single enterprise-wide system called e-TRAC (Electronic Toolkit for Regulatory Assurance and Compliance).
  • Ecolab, a global leader in cleaning and food safety products, is using IHS software to generate more than 100,000 safety data sheets and manage SDSs for 30 countries in 25 languages – increasing productivity 10-15 times by creating all SDSs for all countries within one hour instead of two days.
  • Eglin Air Force Base -- The U.S. Air Force’s largest base achieved 100 percent compliance with state, federal and military regulations and earned a “Full Conformance” rating from the Air Force Material Command, its highest-ever rating from a headquarters audit.
  • Husky Energy leveraged its Environmental Performance Reporting System to reduce verification costs by 50 percent compared to spreadsheets and support a corporate program that reduced greenhouse gas emissions at the company’s East Coast locations by 60 percent.
  • Kinder Morgan, one of North America’s largest pipeline transportation and energy storage providers, complied with 3,482 environmental permits and safety requirements by tracking more than 66,000 compliance actions and achieving an on-time completion rate of 99.9 percent.
  • Kuwait National Petroleum Company demonstrated EHS&S leadership by reaching beyond regulatory compliance to support ISO 9000, ISO 14000 and OHSAS 18000 certification as well as enabling better executive decision-making with dashboard views of key performance indicators.
  • SAMTEC, a major global electronic components provider, implemented Web-based material safety data sheet (MSDS) software that eliminated the need for 18,000 hard copy MSDSs and prevented reporting delays of days or weeks by producing reports in minutes.
  • Total Petrochemicals uses a unified EHS compliance and operational risk management solution from IHS, serving almost 5,000 users worldwide, to support risk rankings and corrective actions that reduce injury rates/costs as well as generating monthly reports in 15 minutes instead of up to 15 days.
  • U.S. Army Red River Depot, a vast North Texas ammunition storage site and maintenance facility, established a stellar record over more than 16 years for chemical inventory, materials and hazardous waste compliance and achieved zero non-conformance in waste container inventory management.
  • U.S. Forest Service – This federal agency’s centralized Safety and Health Integrated Portal System (SHIPS) tracks motor vehicle incidents for 113,000 employees using more than 3,400 vehicles nationwide and has helped reduce safety incident reporting time by 50 percent.
