Harris Corporation Demonstrates Web-Based Weather Planner During
49th Annual ATCA Meeting WASHINGTON, Nov. 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/
-- Harris Corporation (NYSE:HRS), a leading integrator of air
traffic control communications systems and weather data processing
solutions for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), today
unveiled WxPLAN(TM), an advanced, Web-based weather planner that
allows general aviation pilots to directly access multiple layers
of weather data for accurate flight planning. The Harris system is
being demonstrated October 31 through November 3 during the Air
Traffic Control Association's (ATCA) 49th Annual Conference and
Exhibition (Harris Booth #301) being held at the Marriott Wardman
Park Hotel in Washington D.C. WxPLAN is unique in that it allows
pilots and Air Flight Service Station (AFSS) personnel to integrate
and overlay several weather products without clicking in and out of
their primary flight-route planning map. WxPLAN can be accessed
from any computer using a standard Web browser. It is easy to use,
highly flexible, and enables pilots to save preferred sites for
repeated access and use. "This is an exciting new product that will
enhance the efficiency and safety of the general aviation
community," said Al Dukes, president of the Civil Programs business
unit of Harris Corporation's Government Communications Systems
Division (GCSD). "This is just one of several new offerings that we
are developing to address the FAA's initiative to modernize general
aviation flight services." Harris is teamed with the Federal
Aviation Administration's (FAA) Most Efficient Organization (MEO)
in competing for the outsourcing of AFSSs that support general
aviation. Harris will provide systems integration and
communications expertise under the A-76 bid, including flight
planning and weather briefing support. Harris already provides
these services to the AFSSs under the Operational And
Supportability Implementation System (OASIS) and is now bidding to
continue in that role as part of the FAA MEO team. Harris has a
long history of developing and integrating system solutions for the
FAA and the global air traffic control network. Other FAA programs
developed by Harris are the Weather And Radar Processor (WARP), a
weather system serving the en-route air traffic control
environment; OASIS, an integrated weather/flight planning tool that
enables AFSSs to better serve the general aviation pilot community;
the Voice Switching and Control System (VSCS), which provides the
critical air-to-ground communications links between en-route
aircraft and air traffic controllers throughout the continental
United States; and the Alaskan NAS Interfacility Communications
System (ANICS), a satellite-based network that provides critical
NAS interfacility communications (voice and data) for the FAA's
Alaskan Region. In addition, Harris is the prime contractor for the
FAA Telecommunications Infrastructure (FTI) program, which will
provide improved communications services to more than 5,000 FAA
facilities nationwide. Harris GCSD, one of four divisions within
Harris Corporation, conducts advanced research studies, develops
prototypes, and produces and supports state-of-the-art, assured
communications(TM) solutions and information systems that solve the
mission-critical challenges of its military and government
customers, while serving as the technology base for the company's
diverse commercial businesses. Harris Corporation, which also
provides tactical radio, microwave, broadcast, and network products
and systems, serves customers in more than 150 countries. For more
