Silver Wheaton and Goldcorp Support "An Evening to Conquer Oral Cancer"

Canadian mining heavyweights Silver Wheaton (TSX:SLW) (NYSE:SLW) and Goldcorp (TSX: G) (NYSE: GG) have pledged support for the BC Oral Cancer Prevention Program (BCOCPP) at the inaugural event "An Evening to Conquer Oral Cancer" on Apr. 26, 2012 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver. For the last decade, the BCOCPP, a subsidiary of the BC Cancer Agency, has led the ground-breaking Oral Health Research Study, the largest of its kind globally, which has developed new and innovative ways to identify oral cancer in its early stages. Organizers welcomed contributions from the Canadian mining giants and hope the fundraising event will help implement new cancer prevention strategies that will reduce the tragic impact of the illness.

Oral cancer is one of the major human cancers – more common than cervical cancer – with one of the worst survival rates. Even among survivors, treatment can be disfiguring and debilitating. Currently, oral cancer is often identified late and is usually at an advanced stage by the time it is noticed by either patients or medical professionals. However, if caught early, patient survival rates can be significantly improved and chances of disability from treatment are much lower.

The BCOCPP team consists of renowned scientists, surgeons, oral medicine specialists, pathologists, engineers and biostatisticians. Through their 10 years of research, the BCOCPP has learned a tremendous amount about the best tools and strategies for oral cancer prevention, early diagnosis and treatment. As global leaders with the ideas and expertise to combat this dreadful and largely preventable disease, the BCOCPP needs to raise funds to put a decade’s worth of research into action for the public of British Columbia.

This high-profile event will feature a special 'up close and personal' appearance by a Juno award-winning guest artist and the iconic Dr. Art Hister from Global BC as the Master of Ceremonies. Other major sponsors include Stantec Inc and Lawson Lundell LLP. The evening will include a champagne reception, dinner, and silent and live auction. The goal for the event is to raise $250,000.
