StorageTek Customers Now Have More Connectivity Options SAN DIEGO,
FORUM 2003, Oct. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today's
enterprise-class data center managers constantly face the challenge
of having to do more with less. Thanks to StorageTek(R) (Storage
Technology Corporation) , their jobs are now easier. StorageTek,
the storage services and solutions expert, is introducing a native
ESCON interface for its T9840C tape drive. The ESCON interface
allows customers to use the drive in z/OS (MVS) environments and
StorageTek automated tape library systems. The drives double the
capacity of previous T9840 drives, achieve industry-leading data
access speeds and provide ultra-reliable data protection. Building
on the success of StorageTek's market-leading Virtual Storage
Manager(TM) (VSM(TM)) system, StorageTek offers its T9840C for
fast-access use with VSM. The T9840C brings the advantage of
doubling the capacity on 9840 media. StorageTek also offers its
T9940B tape drives for use with VSM. The T9940B brings the highest
capacity cartridge of any drive with a virtual storage solution.
Used together or separately, these two drives reduce costs by
reducing media and library slot requirements. "Our ability to
anticipate our connectivity needs and help them maximize the power
and value of their data storage infrastructures is a key component
to StorageTek's Information Lifecycle Management(TM) strategy,"
said Gary Francis, corporate vice president and general manager,
Automated Tape Solutions, StorageTek. "By expanding our tape drive
connectivity offerings to enable seamless integration in mainframe
environments, our customers can now deploy the most advanced,
reliable drives and libraries available today to protect and manage
their data." "Today's enterprises require intelligent storage
solutions that integrate seamlessly with all flavors of computing
platforms, from open systems to the mainframe," said Fara Yale,
Research vice president, Gartner. "Introducing new connectivity
options for tape drives is one way that a vendor can help its
customers optimize their storage infrastructures to meet their
unique needs." "StorageTek's ESCON-attach T9840C tape drives allow
mainframe computing environments to keep pace with their high
capacity and fast-access tape storage needs," said Thomas J.
Meehan, vice president of Advanced Technology, INNOVATION Data
Processing, an independent software vendor and provider of
non-disruptive business protection and enterprise storage
management solutions. "By supporting StorageTek's T9840C tape
drives with our FDR Storage Management Solution Suite, we are
helping customers to maintain a viable business continuity and data
protection solution as Internet and real-time e-Business
applications drive up their mainframe z/OS, Linux, UNIX, Windows
and LAN server data storage." "CA's BrightStor solutions enable
customers to take full advantage of the flexibility of StorageTek's
newly enhanced T-Series tape drives by providing end-to-end
manageability of their interconnected data center storage
environments," said Ed Cooper, director of product marketing for
CA's BrightStor solutions. "CA and StorageTek will continue working
together to help customers address their needs for increased
capacity, performance and operational efficiency." Both the T9840C
and T9940B drives feature StorageTek's proprietary VolSafe(R)
advanced WORM (Write-Once-Read-Many) technology designed to support
today's stringent electronic data storage regulatory mandates.
Further extending its leadership in tape drive connectivity,
StorageTek introduced a native FICON interface for its T9840B tape
drive last summer. The company plans to introduce native FICON
interfaces for its T9840C and capacity-centric T9940B tape drives
in the first half of 2004. With native FICON connectivity,
customers in mainframe environments can achieve significant data
throughput gains and greater cabling distances for data
transmission to offsite datacenters for business continuity and
disaster recovery applications. For more information on
