Popular Pays Homage to Tite Curet Alonso in 19th Annual Holiday Music Special

Popular announced today, the launch of their new music special, ¡Sonó, Sonó…Tite Curet! This year marks the 19th anniversary of the holiday music special. ¡Sonó, Sonó…Tite Curet! is dedicated to renowned Puerto Rican composer Catalino Curet Alonso, best known as “Tite.”

Artists who participated in this year’s music special include: Calle 13 with Seun Kuti and Sammy Tanco, Danny Rivera, Plenazo Callejero, Rubén Blades, Andy Montañez, Cheo Feliciano, Jerry Medina with Roberto Roena and his band, Apollo Sound, La PVC together with Fe Cortijo and Ismaelito Rivera, Tego Calderón, Yuba Iré, Trina Medina, Orquesta la 33, Cultura Profética, Michael Stuart, Luis Daniel Colón together with Midalis Torres and Ricardo Sierra, Viento de Agua, Lalo Rodríguez with Truco and Zaperoko.

This year the music special anecdotally recounts Tite’s music revisiting the symbolic places and features spectacular visual scenes through Puerto Rico and Venezuela, a country Tite visited and loved very much, and New York, a place where some of the world’s most recognized salsa musicians gathered.

“For us it was incredibly important to dedicate this music special to Tite, whom we admire because of his great character, humility and generosity. Tite was an artist who freely shared his talent and presented the world with his greatest compositions. We found it absolutely necessary to pay homage to him. We feel proud of this piece and hope others share the same pride and joy we feel with this music special,” said Richard L. Carrión, Chairman and CEO of Popular.

The music special featuring many well-known Latin artists will air on Sunday, December 4 at 5:00 PM EST on Telemundo in New York and Telemundo in Miami. It will also air on SBS Mega TV at 7 PM CST in Chicago and in Florida and Texas at 8 PM EST. WAPA America New York and Miami will air the special at 8:00 PM EST. The music special will also air on December 11 at 5 PM EST on Telemundo in Orlando, Tampa, Boston and Providence. Direct TV will also show the special on December 24 at 8:00 PM EST.

The music special has two formats, one is 58 minutes long that has been prepared for a television format and the other is an 80-minute DVD format for sale. The DVD has many extras, including additional interviews behind-the-camera scenes and 13 songs with music videos. The music CD has 18 songs. These will be made available through: iTunes and Amazon as well as through Popular Community Bank and Banco Popular branches.

The music special direction was led by Gabriel Coss and Israel Lugo from the group Rojo Chiringa and production was led by José Cotté and Yamara Rodríguez. The music coordination was led by José Lugo, Ricardo Pons and Omar Silva.

As done in previous years, CD sale proceeds will benefit The Banco Popular Foundation which also supports youth programs in the arts and music. Other beneficiaries include The Music Conservatory in Puerto Rico and Las Escuelas Libres de Música y la Loaiza Cordero.
