CMG SpeedMaster(TM) Integral Motor Wins Prestigious 'Engineering Excellence Award for Engineering Innovation' Fairchild Semiconductor's (NYSE: FCS) FSAM30SH60A advanced smart power module (SPM(TM)), providing a high performance, compact solution for AC motor drive applications, has been selected by CMG of Australia for use in its new SpeedMaster(TM) Integral Motor-Drive. According to CMG of Australia, the SpeedMaster is an award-winning integrated motor-variable frequency drive unit that was recently honored with the prestigious 'Victorian Engineering Excellence Award for Engineering Innovation' in Australia. AC induction motors are widely used by the manufacturing or material processing industries. According to CMG, the SpeedMaster is a patented development that delivers powerful yet simple speed control of electric motors. State-of-the-art control technology incorporated into a normal sized motor allows a user to plug the motor into a standard and use it immediately with no additional cabling or programming required. It is claimed to be the first integrated motor-drive unit with a design that overcomes heat, vibration and electromagnetic interference, which is damaging to sensitive electronics. The CMG SpeedMaster is also environmentally friendly, minimizing energy consumption at a competitive startup cost. "Without a device like the Fairchild SPM, CMG could not have developed the SpeedMaster, as a standard discrete 1.5kW motor control circuit could not fit on a circuit board the size of a CD," said Mark Davies, application engineer at Arrow Electronics Australia. "However, it wasn't just the technical capabilities of the component that ensured success for CMG, it was the close co-operation between Arrow and Fairchild that ensured we met all CMG's exacting requirements." Fairchild Semiconductor's FSAM30SH60A combines optimized circuit protection and drive matched to low-loss IGBTs. Highly effective short-circuit current detection/protection is realized through the use of advanced current sensing IGBT chips that allow continuous monitoring of the IGBT's current. System reliability is further enhanced by the built-in over-temperature monitoring and integrated undervoltage lock-out protection. The high speed built-in high-voltage IC (HVIC) provides optocoupler-less IGBT gate driving capability, further reducing the overall size of the inverter system design. In addition, the incorporated HVIC facilitates the use of single-supply drive topology enabling the FSAM30SH60A to be driven by only one drive supply voltage without negative bias. Inverter current sensing application can be achieved due to the divided negative DC terminals. The Victorian Engineering Excellence Awards are held biannually. These prestigious awards showcase engineers and leading edge, innovative engineering projects and products.
