Fairchild Semiconductor's (NYSE: FCS) IntelliMAX(TM), integrated low-power load switches targeting portable battery-powered applications, have been awarded Leading Product status in the power device and module segment of EDN China's first Innovation Awards. Offering a unique combination of protection, control and fault monitoring features in one low-profile SC-70 package, advanced IntelliMAX devices meet critical board space, system architecture and customer time-to-market requirements for cell phone handsets, MP3 players, digital still cameras, notebook computers, networking products and PDAs. These products are well suited for low-voltage in-rush current control in telecom and industrial equipment. FPF200x devices' wide input voltage range of 1.8 to 5.5V is ideal for today's electronics with battery-operating voltages that can dip as low as 1.8V. "The FPF200X series of IntelliMAX advanced load switches offer designers an off-the-shelf solution that greatly simplifies designs while delivering excellent power management, load-control and protection benefits," said Eric Kuo, Fairchild's president and managing director, Sales Asia Pacific. "We are proud to receive this prestigious award from EDN China. It validates our belief that the IntelliMAX technology, which combines the best of low-voltage power semiconductors and analog control circuitry with surface-mount packaging technology, is the right choice for China's engineers seeking solutions for the latest ultra-portable products." The IntelliMAX products faced stiff competition from 119 other products from 43 vendors eligible to compete in eight award categories. Each IntelliMAX load switch replaces multiple active and passive components used in traditional analog IC control functions and MOSFET power switches. In addition to saving circuit board area, the IntelliMAX integrated approach speeds time-to-market by allowing designers to select the right IntelliMAX device to meet system requirements without requiring extra hardware or software/system modifications. The reduced number of components needed to accomplish this leads to substantial inventory and assembly cost-savings. The FPF200X series offers a range of device options, providing designers with the flexibility to address a multitude of system architectures. Each FPF200X load switch includes controlled switch turn-on, current-limiting with 50 mA or 100 mA options, under-voltage lockout and thermal shutdown. Also included is a flag for fault conditions with options for fault blanking; and auto-restart functions--all with 4KV ESD protection. IntelliMAX features low-shutdown current (less than 1 uA) to conserve battery life, and a fast current limit response time (3 us for nominal over-current conditions, 20ns for hard short conditions) for safety/fault protection. Fairchild has recently launched eleven new IntelliMAX(TM) high-current (up to 400 mA), low loss (typical RDS(ON) = 0.120 ohms) load switches. These devices reduce design cycle times and costs for the latest generation of battery-powered portable applications. The extensive IntelliMAX load management portfolio ensures a high degree of flexibility by addressing various system architectures to simplify designs. Each FPF21XX device integrates more protection, control and fault-monitoring features into the smallest package (SOT-23) than competitive 200/400 mA products. This comprehensive feature-set includes: -- Controlled switch turn-on reduces in-rush current and supply transients; -- Current-limiting with device options (200 mA, 400 mA); -- Under-voltage lockout; -- Thermal shutdown to reduce excessive heating or system damage; -- Hard/short protection with fast response time (20 nanoseconds) for hard short conditions; -- Fast current-limit response time (3 microseconds) for nominal over-current conditions; -- Flag for fault conditions with options for fault blanking, auto-restart functions; and -- Options for reverse-current blocking capability. The optional reverse-current blocking feature offered by the FPF2108/09/10 devices ensures uni-directional current flow--a key benefit for systems connected directly to a battery or DC power source where current must only flow in one direction. In addition, all FPF21XX devices provide a low (less than 1 microampere) shutdown current to conserve battery life. The IntelliMAX FPF21XX devices are available in a small-footprint, low-profile SOT-23 package. All IntelliMAX products are lead-free (Pb-free) and meet or exceed the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020B and are compliant with the European Union requirements now in effect.
