The U.S. Green Building Council recently awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Silver certification to the Career Education Corporation (CEC) (NASDAQ: CECO) Campus Support Center in Schaumburg, Ill.

CEC thoroughly renovated the former data center, transforming it into a modern, 11-story office building, while adhering to LEED practices for sustainable design. Employees in the building today provide centralized support for the more than 90 campuses in the CEC family of schools.

“Transforming an older structure into a LEED certified building comes with many challenges, but it’s something we felt strongly about doing as an organization. Many of our employees have expressed how pleased they are to be working in a ‘green’ building,” said Steve Miller, Vice President of Real Estate for CEC. “It’s not only important to demonstrate our commitment to environmental stewardship, but we project that these energy-conservation measures will result in meaningful long term savings for the organization.”

Among the features that helped CEC’s Campus Support Center, located at 231 N. Martingale Road, earn LEED Silver certification are:

  • Bike storage and locker rooms for employees commuting by bicycle or exercising during lunch;
  • Lighting systems with timers and daylight response meters to control light levels depending on the time of day and amount of natural light available;
  • Low-mercury light bulbs throughout the building;
  • Water efficient fixtures that reduce water use by 30 percent over standard fixtures;
  • Daylight and glare control for 75 percent of the occupied spaces;
  • Optimized HVAC systems and ensuring at least 85 percent of appliances are Energy Star rated;
  • And power contracts that provide 100 percent of the building’s energy from environmentally-friendly sources;

The one-year construction process to convert the building to its existing use also adhered to many LEED-endorsed practices. CEC diverted 75 percent of construction waste from landfills and into recycling centers, used 20 percent recycled content in construction and furniture and incorporated materials that emit low levels of volatile organic compounds.

In addition, LEED recognizes the value a comfortable workplace plays in the well-being of its employees. CEC outfitted the Campus Support Center with ergonomically-designed chairs, computer monitors, keyboard trays and other features to ensure comfort and avoid injuries.

CEC acknowledged its landlord Keystone Property Group and CB Richard Ellis, the project manager for the Campus Support Center renovation, for their expertise in recommending improvements to obtain LEED Silver certification and managing the overall application process.

“The green building movement offers an unprecedented opportunity to respond to the most important challenges of our time, including global climate change, dependence on non-sustainable and expensive sources of energy and threats to human health,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The work of innovative building projects such as Career Education Corporation’s Campus Support Center is a fundamental driving force in the green building movement.”

LEED is an internationally-recognized green building certification system. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in March 2000, LEED provides building owners and operators with a framework for identifying and implementing practical and measurable green building design, construction, operations and maintenance solutions.

Because commercial buildings make up more than 70 percent of energy consumption and nearly 40 percent of CO2 emissions, it is more important than ever for companies to do the right thing to protect the environment. Breakthroughs in design, technology and operational procedures now allow companies to maximize both environmental and economic performance.
