California Micro Devices Announces EMI Filter Breakthrough Enabling New ASIP(TM) Products Praetorian(TM) Process Integrates Inductors to Enable Superior EMI Filters for High Speed Data Interfaces MILPITAS, Calif., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- California Micro Devices (NASDAQ:CAMD) today announced the availability of its new patent-pending Praetorian(TM) advanced ASIP(TM) (Application Specific Integrated Passive(TM)) process that enables the integration of spiral inductors with resistors, capacitors and ESD protection diodes in a single chip design. ASIP(TM) products utilizing the Praetorian(TM) process will address the challenging electromagnetic (EMI) filter and electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection requirements of emerging high speed, high resolution, color LCD display and camera imager interfaces for wireless handsets with "best of breed" EMI filter performance. Products built with the innovative Praetorian(TM) process will deliver a clearly defined value proposition based upon industry leading performance, reduced solution form factor, and lower solution costs. California Micro Devices will release new ASIP(TM) products based on this new process in the fourth quarter of calendar 2004. Current solutions are acceptable for the lower data rates typically used by first generation color displays and camera imagers. However, they do not adequately address the requirements of the latest model handsets that incorporate higher resolution color LCD displays and camera imagers, both of which require higher data rates. These applications, increasingly featured in high volume designs, require EMI filters that effectively attenuate signals in the frequency range from 800MHz to 2.7GHz while supporting data rates as high as 120Mbps. As a result, an optimal EMI filter for these applications needs to have a high cutoff frequency and an attenuation curve with a very steep roll-off. California Micro Devices filters using its new Praetorian(TM) process enabling integrated inductors will deliver these results while also providing a high level of ESD performance. Praetorian(TM) ASIP(TM) Process The Praetorian(TM) ASIP(TM) process utilizes California Micro Devices' successful Centurion(TM) zener process to produce the underlying resistor, capacitor and diode structures. The addition of a dielectric layer and spiral copper inductor completes the new process. This innovative, patent-pending approach enables California Micro Devices to produce highly integrated single chip EMI filters with ESD protection that offer industry leading performance. Initial Praetorian(TM) ASIP(TM) devices will be packaged in chip scale format to offer a reduced solution form factor. Clear Value Proposition Products built from the Praetorian(TM) integrated inductor process will offer customers a clear value proposition when compared to existing solutions comprised of discrete components and ceramic multi-channel inductor/capacitor (LC) arrays. When compared to these devices, Praetorian(TM) solutions feature superior EMI filter performance, integrated ESD protection, and significant form factor and solution cost reductions in a single integrated device. Praetorian(TM) EMI filters with ESD protection will integrate as many as 56 discrete components including inductors, diodes and capacitors in a single, 8 channel space saving chip scale package. An integrated passive device that provides superior EMI filter performance combined with robust ESD protection is vital for applications featuring high speed data interfaces. The ESD protection solution needs to provide a high level of ESD protection and at the same time have low capacitance so that it will not impact the rise and fall times of high speed signals. California Micro Devices' Praetorian(TM) ASIP(TM) solutions offer the best of both worlds, delivering industry leading EMI filtering and ESD protection performance.
