Company Hopes to Surpass the 140,000 Community Service Hours
Contributed in 2009, Will Target Educational Theme to Support
Causes Domestically and Abroad as Part of Travel Programs SPOKANE,
Wash., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- People to People
Ambassador Programs, the leader in global educational travel
experiences, today announced that the company has selected the 2010
theme of "Education" for its community service component for its
Student Ambassador and Citizen Ambassador educational travel
programs. The company hopes to surpass the 140,000 community
service hours contributed for the 2009 travel year, and has
strengthened the community service curricula in order to provide
extended opportunities for its student and adult travelers to give
back to communities both domestically and abroad. Each Student
Ambassador and Citizen Ambassador Program itinerary dedicates time
for community service in which travelers are asked to serve their
community and/or participate in an international service project.
The 2010 theme is "Education," where travelers are asked to devote
time to a cause dedicated to promoting better education in a
variety of forms, whether it is related to better educational
opportunities for the disadvantaged, education toward a cause, or
education around the impact that one can make within their own
communities by small projects and actions. "Education is imperative
to all of us and we continue to learn and improve our programs each
year to give our travelers more opportunities to directly connect
with different cultures and experiences," said Peg Thomas,
president of People to People Ambassador Programs. "We aim to
provide unique and lasting experiences for our travelers, and one
of the greatest ways students can gain a better understanding of
other cultures is through service - by directly impacting the
people and places they visit." People to People Ambassador Programs
ask that its Student Ambassadors spend nearly six months prior to
departure meeting regularly to learn more about their planned
destinations and to discover the cultural differences of the
countries they will visit. Community service is part of the
programs at home prior to departure and most programs have a
community service component as part of the international experience
as well. The "Education" theme for 2010 is designed to help
students better understand how these service projects, one at a
time, can add up to make a global impact. It is believed that
service projects like these, completed at a young age, will help
instill habits of a lifetime. Planned community service projects
and affiliations for 2010 include: Domestic examples: -- Watershed
assistance for Gunpowder Valley Conservancy, park restoration
outside Baltimore, Maryland -- Million Trees, New York City --
Feeding America, numerous locations -- Chicago Cares -- Share Food
Network, Washington, DC area International examples: -- Work with
