--Apple Inc. (AAPL) has been speaking with companies who supply sensors for self-driving cars, while still working on its own technology, Reuters reports Wednesday, citing "three people familiar with the discussions."

--Apple is looking for lidar units that are smaller and cheaper to produce than those currently available, the report said.

--Lidar units use laser pulses to create digital 3-D representations of objects.
