PG&E’s clean energy and sustainability initiatives have been
recognized by the 2017 Newsweek Green Rankings, which named the
company as the greenest energy provider in the nation and the No. 4
greenest company overall.
The annual rankings assess the sustainability performance of the
500 largest publicly-traded companies in the United States.
PG&E maintained its top spot among gas and electric companies
while improving on its 2016 overall ranking of No. 15.
“Creating a sustainable energy future is at the core of
PG&E’s vision. This ranking reflects our progress in protecting
the environment as we build a safe, reliable, affordable and clean
energy future for our customers and communities. As we observe the
real and present impacts of climate change, we are more motivated
than ever to continue that work today and into the future,” said
PG&E Corporation CEO and President Geisha Williams.
Newsweek performs its annual assessments in partnership with
Corporate Knights, an independent research company, and HIP
Investor Inc., a firm that rates companies and investments for
their benefit or cost to society, and the associated risks or
opportunities for investors.
The rankings are based on eight indicators covering energy,
greenhouse gases, water, waste, green revenues, linking executive
pay to sustainability, board-level committee oversight of
sustainability and third-party audited environmental metrics.
PG&E’s commitment to sustainability includes:
- Delivering power that’s among the
cleanest in the nation, with nearly 70 percent coming from
greenhouse-gas free resources.
- Using state-of-the-art detection
technology to find and eliminate methane leaks in its natural gas
distribution system.
- Working to deploy 7,500 electric
vehicle charging stations throughout Northern and Central
California.
- Helping customers save $258 million on
their energy bills through energy efficiency.
- Launching the Better Together Resilient
Communities grant program, a shareholder-funded initiative that
will invest $2 million over five years to support local climate
resilience planning efforts.

diversity results, directing $2.85 billion or 44.4 percent of our
total procurement toward diverse-certified firms.
