NORTHBROOK, Ill., Dec. 4, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- College
football fans have voted College of
Wooster offensive lineman Patrick
Mohorcic as the 2017 Allstate American Football Coaches
Association (AFCA) Good Works Team® captain for his
exceptional community service accomplishments and dedication to
giving back to those in need. To commemorate his achievement,
Mohorcic will be recognized by Allstate Insurance Company and the
AFCA during the live broadcast of The Home Depot College Football
Awards airing on ESPN on Dec. 7,
2017.
For 26 years, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team has shined a
light on the inspiring stories of selflessness demonstrated by
college football players across the country whose good works extend
far beyond the field of play. There were 22 student-athletes named
to the 2017 team in September, but only one was named team captain
through fan voting on ESPN.com/Allstate.
A senior and three-year starter on the Wooster offensive line, Mohorcic earned a
place on this year's Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® for
his selfless commitment to a student organization called Men
Working For Change. Though the group was established several years
prior to Mohorcic's freshman year, it had been disbanded by the
time he arrived on campus. Mohorcic played a significant role in
revitalizing the group, which raises advocacy and awareness about
ways to prevent sexual assault through seminars and other planned
events on campus.
Additionally, Mohorcic is a co-founder of ScotsCare, an
organization that is working to develop a positive connection
between Wooster athletic programs
and students at a school in Ohio
for children affected by developmental disabilities. Mohorcic has
said that his goal is to offer those students unique experiences
such as attending sporting events to give them an opportunity to
interact with student-athletes and feel like they are a part of the
Wooster family. Mohorcic also
helped create a community event called Rock the Block in
South Euclid, OH that promotes
economic prosperity and community collaboration throughout the
city.
"Patrick is a fantastic ambassador for the Allstate AFCA Good
Works Team® and all of these student-athletes who go the
extra mile to positively impact the lives of others," said
Thomas Clarkson, president of the
west territory for Allstate Insurance Company. "Allstate is proud
to play a role in honoring Patrick for his achievements off the
field, and for being a leader and a role model in the College of Wooster community. We are thrilled to
recognize a young man that embodies the characteristics of what
this award represents."
Joining a long list of service-oriented athletes, Mohorcic is
the College of Wooster's first player
to be named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® and
only the second Division III Good Works Team captain in the history
of the program.
Mohorcic and his fellow Allstate AFCA Good Works
Team® members have been invited to New Orleans, where they'll celebrate their
shared passion for service during a special volunteer project prior
to the 2018 Allstate® Sugar Bowl®. The
players will also be honored on the field at halftime during the
game on January 1, 2018.
To compose the 2017 Good Works Team®, a final roster
of 22 award recipients – 11 players from the NCAA Football Bowl
Subdivision and 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship
Subdivision, Divisions II, III and the NAIA – was selected from
this year's 146 nominees. Northwestern
University's Pat Fitzgerald
was chosen to represent this year's team as its honorary head coach
for his standout commitment to both serving his community and
instilling the drive to give back in his players.
Fans are encouraged to visit ESPN.com/Allstate to learn more
about this year's team members and their extensive community
service efforts.
