Corning's gasoline particulate filters enable the next
generation of clean-gasoline engines
CORNING, N.Y., AUGUST 31, 2017 - Corning
Incorporated (NYSE: GLW) announced today that Groupe PSA is
equipping all PureTech gasoline-direct-injection engine models with
gasoline particulate filters (GPF) from Corning, beginning in
October 2017. DuraTrap® GC filters
enable a significant reduction in particulate emissions for the
most efficient generation of PureTech engines.
Evolving the PureTech powertrain to include
DuraTrap® GC filters is a continuation of Groupe PSA's commitment
to innovation and global emissions reduction. Groupe PSA was the
first major automaker to introduce particulate filters on its
diesel engines in 2000. In May of this year, Groupe PSA announced
plans to leverage GPFs as a new strategic step in reducing
emissions across its fleet as it addresses the challenges of energy
transition.
The launch of this new emissions control
technology is the result of a close collaboration between Groupe
PSA and Corning. Corning's expertise in ceramic science and systems
integration helped Groupe PSA design in these new particulate
filters, resulting in a robust solution to help reduce emissions
and reach new levels of engine efficiency.
"We are pleased to supply Groupe PSA with
next-generation emissions control solutions as they advance
automotive design," said Klaus Wellstein, general manager, Germany
and South Africa, Corning Environmental Technologies. "We are
well-equipped to provide a range of proven emissions solutions to
our customers that advance clean-gasoline design for the next round
of emissions regulations."
The Groupe PSA's 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder Turbo
PureTech gasoline engine was awarded the 2017 "Engine of the Year"
in its category for the third year in a row at the 19th
International Engine of the Year Awards in Stuttgart, Germany. Over
850,000 units have been produced in France and China since
PureTech's launch in 2014 and deployed on more than 90 vehicle
applications in 70 countries, confirming the industrial and
commercial success of this engine. PureTech engines are powering
Groupe PSA's latest models, such as the new Peugeot 3008 SUV,
selected as the 2017 "European Car of the Year," and the new
Citroën C3. This latest generation of PureTech powertrains is
compliant with Euro 6d and China 6b regulations, which require
real-driving emissions (RDE) compliance.
All high-performance PureTech engines for the EU
and Chinese markets will be equipped with Corning DuraTrap® GC
filters. Corning's Kaiserslautern, Germany, facility will supply
the European market and its new Hefei, China, facility will supply
the Chinese market.
DuraTrap® GC filters feature a cordierite-based
material composition with an innovative engineered ceramic
microstructure designed to efficiently trap fine particulates from
gasoline engine exhaust while maintaining vehicle performance with
low engine back pressure.
Corning is a leading supplier of advanced
cellular ceramic substrates and ceramic particulate
filters for the world's major manufacturers of gasoline and diesel
vehicles. The company invented an economical, high-performance,
cellular ceramic substrate in the early 1970s that is now the
standard for catalytic converters worldwide. In 1978, Corning
developed the cellular ceramic particulate filter to remove soot
from diesel emissions. Corning continues to leverage its expertise
in ceramic science and extrusion manufacturing technology to
develop market-leading emissions control solutions that help our
customers meet new emission standards and enable cleaner air
worldwide.
