“Diversity and inclusion are at the core of PG&E’s culture.
They drive our commitment to serve our customers and treating
everyone with respect. Our strong support for these core values
help us to work together across all the communities we serve and,
ultimately, to build a better California,” said PG&E Senior
Vice President of Human Resources and Chief Diversity Officer
Dinyar Mistry.
DiversityInc’s annual survey – tracking the nation’s top
companies in terms of hiring, retaining and promoting women,
minorities, people with disabilities, LGBT and veterans – is a
rigorous, data-driven survey, gauging detailed demographics and
management practices at some of the largest American employers.
Companies with more than 1,000 U.S.-based employees are eligible
to enter and there’s no cost to compete. Each company’s rank is
based on data from a more than 200-question survey.
Companies are evaluated within the context of their own
industries. Their performance is assessed equally in four key areas
of diversity management:
- Talent Pipeline: workforce
breakdown, recruitment, composition of existing talent and
structures.
- Equitable Talent Development:
employee resource groups, mentoring, philanthropy, movement and
fairness.
- CEO/Leadership Commitment:
accountability for results, personal communications and
visibility.
- Supplier Diversity: spend with
companies owned by people from underrepresented groups,
accountability and support.
PG&E’s leadership strongly supports the company’s commitment
to diversity and inclusion – from an inclusive board of directors
with a diverse representation, to embedded diversity and inclusion
learning in leadership training. In addition, the company has a
history of grassroots employee resource groups that goes back more
than four decades.
For the last 14 years, PG&E has been named as one of the
best places to work by the Human Rights Campaign, the largest civil
rights organization working to achieve equality for LGBT Americans.
And PG&E was only one of two energy companies to post a 100
score on last year’s Disability Equality Index, which measures
companies on their disability inclusion policies and practices.
The utility also has one of the nation’s top diverse supply
chains. In 2016, PG&E spent a record $2.8 billion with diverse
suppliers. For the last five years, diverse suppliers have
accounted for more than $2 billion of PG&E’s spend and more
than 40 percent of the utility’s spend for the fourth consecutive
year. In addition, PG&E was named 2016 Corporation of the Year
by the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.
PG&E’s Supply Chain Responsibility program has gained
recognition from national organizations. Among the recent
honors:
- Last November, PG&E became the
first local or regional enterprise to receive the Gazelle Award
from the National Minority Supplier Development Council
(NMSDC).
- Last September, PG&E received an
“A” for supplier diversity from The Greenlining Institute.
- Last August, Minority Business News USA
Magazine named PG&E among its 2016 Corporate 101: Most Admired
Companies in Supplier Diversity.
PG&E’s Supply Chain Responsibility website contains more
information about the program. The site also provides details on
how to become a certified diverse supplier.
