curriculum to more than 600 students at Ashdown Public
Schools
Domtar Corporation (NYSE: UFS) (TSX: UFS) announced that trained
volunteers from the company’s pulp and paper manufacturing mill in
Ashdown, AR, and the local business community, will visit
Ashdown Public Schools on April 21 and May 12 to teach the
Junior Achievement curriculum to students in grades 2-8. A
Fortune 500 company, Domtar makes a wide variety of everyday
products from sustainable wood fiber, such as copy paper and
diapers. Domtar’s pulp and paper mill in Ashdown employs nearly 850
people in the local community.
In an effort funded by Domtar’s Ashdown mill, a total of 30
volunteers from the mill and local business community were trained
to teach the Junior Achievement curriculum, an economic education
program that provides students with the knowledge and skills needed
to own their economic success—with a focus on work readiness,
entrepreneurship, and financial literacy. Volunteers will spend the
day with students on the following days:
- Friday, April
21: Ashdown Elementary School, Grade 2 & LF
Henderson Intermediate School Grades 3-5, and
- Friday, May
12: Ashdown Junior High School, Grades 6-8.
“Our employees’ work with Junior Achievement is a great example
of how you can build that important bridge between the workplace,
the classroom, and the community,” said Tammy Waters, Domtar
Manager, Communications & Government Relations. “It’s exciting
to be able to reach more than 600 students in just two days, with
lessons that help them understand fundamental economic principles,
the importance of staying in school and teamwork, and the role of
businesses, government, and individuals in our community.”
Domtar provides all funding for the Junior Achievement program
in the Ashdown Public Schools. One of the largest Junior
Achievement efforts in the state, Domtar has partnered with the
non-profit organization since 1997. Domtar’s Junior Achievement
work began with second graders, adding one grade level each year
until 2002—teaching students through the eighth grade. Last year,
instead of teaching over the course of multiple days, mill
volunteers piloted “JA In A Day,” covering the entire curriculum in
a single day. The new format was so well-received that the schools
requested it be done again this year.
“We’re tremendously proud of Domtar’s commitment to the students
of Ashdown Public Schools,” said Chad Kauffman, President at Junior
Achievement of Arkansas. “Our twenty-year partnership with Domtar
is a model we hold up for other businesses that want to make
long-term investments in the young people that will shape the
future of their communities.”
