TOKYO—A wearable device for playing popular smartphone game "Poké mon Go" will be released next week, game developer Niantic Inc. and Poké mon Co. said Thursday.

The announcement came after Apple Inc.'s new iPhone event on Wednesday, where Alphabet Inc.'s Google spinoff Niantic said it would provide an Apple Watch version of the popular game.

Poké mon Go Plus, a $35 device, has vibration notifications that could improve the game's safety. There have been traffic accidents involving players whose eyes were pinned to their smartphone screens.

The device, which will be distributed by Nintendo Co., was originally planned to launch by this past July.
