Definition of Withholding Tax
The income tax in the US that is withheld from an employees wage that a company pays to the government. Tax can also be withheld from dividends or interest. The primary purpose of withholding tax is tax evasion or failure to pay. There is a European Union withholding tax that is deducted from interest earned by European citizens.
