Definition of Acceleration Clause

An acceleration clause is a contractual protocol that triggers the entire unpaid balance of a loan to become due and payable immediately if specific actions or events occur. For example, if an individual misses several loan repayment on their mortgage, then (depending upon the parameters specified in the contract) the individual becomes contractually obligated to repay the entire amount.
