Charter Communications Inc. on Wednesday said it named Christopher Winfrey president and chief executive, effective Dec. 1.

The Stamford, Conn., cable giant said Thomas Rutledge, who has been CEO since 2012 and chairman since 2016, is retiring but will continue to serve as executive chairman through the end of his contract in November 2023.

Mr. Winfrey, who joined Charter as chief financial officer in 2010, succeeded John Bickham as chief operating officer late last year.
