Deutsche Post AG has delivered more parcels in Germany so far this year than in the whole of 2019, boosted by the coronavirus pandemic, the company said Friday.

With five weeks left before year-end, the German postal-and-logistics company said it has already transported 1.6 billion packages this year, more than the 1.58 billion in the whole of 2019, which was a record for the company. Deutsche Post expects an increase of almost 15% on last year's total, to 1.8 billion packages by the end of 2020.

"Strengthened by the corona crisis, parcel volumes in this year's pre-Christmas period will also be much higher than in previous years," Deutsche Post said. A growing trend toward e-commerce has already boosted volumes over the past years.

The company said in October it would hire new staff to cope with the increase in demand and it this month reported a net profit increase of more than 50% for the third quarter.
