BERLIN-- BASF SE said Tuesday two employees had died and two
people were missing a day after an explosion at its plant complex
and headquarters in Ludwigshafen, Germany.
Six people were seriously injured and several others suffered
light injuries in the explosion, which took place at 0920 GMT
Monday during work on a pipeline system at the plant, the company
said.
The chemical giant said the explosion had caused it to suspend
the operation of its steamcrackers, which are used to convert
hydrocarbons into other chemicals. The suspension will interrupt
the supply chain of its raw materials and that around 20 other
plants are either shut down or only partially running, the company
said
BASF added that measurements taken outside of the plant have
shown no increased levels of toxic substances in the air or the
ground.
