EAST SETAUKET, N.Y., Dec. 30, 2024 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ -- Aster, a 218-unit luxury apartment community in Long Beach, California, welcomed its first residents in December 2024. PENETRON ADMIX SB, a crystalline waterproofing admixture, was specified over a competitive product to protect the apartment's elevator pits from the water ingress and related corrosion.

The PENETRON ADMIX SB-treated elevator pits will be able to self-heal micro-cracks for the service life of the treated concrete at the Aster complex. This treatment effectively minimizes any future waterproofing related maintenance costs.

Located just 20 miles (32 km) south of downtown Los Angeles, Long Beach is a city of around 450,000 and is best known for its popular waterfront attractions, including the RMS Queen Mary and the Aquarium of the Pacific. It also hosts the IndyCar Grand Prix of Long Beach, and the Long Beach Pride Festival & Parade. The city is home to California State University, Long Beach, one of the largest universities in California by enrollment. It also comprises the Port of Long Beach, the 2nd busiest container port in the United States and is among the world's largest shipping ports.

Designed by Carrier Johnson + Culture as a contemporary podium-type building with an exterior of cement plaster and metal panels, the Aster is an eight-story luxury residential complex. It houses 218 residential units, available in a range of layouts, from studio to 1–2-bedroom apartments (470-1435 ft2). The ground floor offers 8,200 ft2 (745 m2) of retail space and there is parking for 312 vehicles on 2 basement levels.

"With a residential project of this size, the Aster integrated a number of elevators and the corresponding elevator shafts extend about 1.5 m (5 ft) below the lowest floor slab of the underground garage," explains Patrick O'Brien, Western Region Sales Manager for Penetron USA. "These elevator pits house the mechanics of an elevator system and required particularly durable protection from the area's marine environment and the resulting high groundwater levels."

A competitive admixture was originally specified as the concrete waterproofing solution for the elevator pits, but after reviewing the performance and cost parameters, CalPortland, the ready-mix concrete supplier, submitted a substitution request that specified PENETRON ADMIX SB, a crystalline waterproofing admixture, for the elevator pits.

Delivered in pre-measured soluble bags, PENETRON ADMIX SB was added to the concrete mix during batching. Once part of the concrete mix, the active ingredients in the admixture react in a catalytic reaction to the moisture in concrete. This reaction generates a non-soluble crystalline formation throughout the pores and capillary tracts of the concrete. The entire concrete matrix is now impermeable, stopping the penetration of groundwater and moisture from any direction.

"The PENETRON ADMIX SB-treated elevator pits will be able to self-heal micro-cracks for the service life of the treated concrete at the Aster complex," concludes Patrick O'Brien. "This treatment effectively minimizes any future waterproofing related maintenance costs."
