                               AGM Trading Update

At the Company's Annual General Meeting to be held today in Newport, Gwent, the
Chairman, Sir Terry Matthews will update shareholders as follows:


"Further to my statement in the Annual Report, the Company continues to make
progress with both channel partners and service providers. The announcements
this week regarding the signing of a strategic partnership agreement with
UTStarcom, a global leader in IP-based end-to-end networking solutions, and the
deployment of Newport's session border controller by Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan's
largest integrated telecommunications operator, are significant steps for
Newport in the Asia Pacific marketplace that also help to stimulate further
business.


In Europe, the Company continues to make good technical and commercial progress
regarding the development of softswitch controlled Border Gateway products for
initial deployment in a major Network Equipment Vendor's overall IMS solution
for worldwide sale. This represents a significant part of the Company's overall
strategic direction where we will make further announcements in due course.


In the Americas, the Company has increased its focus on the Caribbean and Latin
America region, where the distributed architecture associated with the Newport
1460 and 310 products is particularly well suited to address the growing
opportunities in the region.


As a contribution to cash flow, Newport has received confirmation from HM
Revenue & Customs that the 2006 R&D Tax Credit repayment of #1.38m will be made
to the Company in early June.


Newport has made reasonable progress in the year to date. Although we are
optimistic for the remaining period of the year, we will continue to monitor the
future funding requirement of the business carefully through maintaining a
review of the cash headroom and keeping all options under consideration."
