Seamless Movement of Patient Data Among Multiple Agencies
Successfully Demonstrated WASHINGTON, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/
-- Harris Corporation (NYSE: HRS) recently delivered the first set
of services capabilities for the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services' Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN)
CONNECT Gateway project. The software recently enabled seamless
health information sharing among multiple federal agencies and
health information exchanges during a demonstration attended by
Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt and members of
the NHIN Forum in Washington, DC. The demonstration featured the
capabilities of the NHIN CONNECT Gateway software built by Harris
to support secure information exchange over the NHIN including the
Department of Defense, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the
Social Security Administration, the Indian Health Service, the
Centers for Disease Control, and the National Cancer Institute. The
information transmitted included medical notes, lab results and
other critical data. The NHIN CONNECT Gateway is scheduled for
release to the public in March 2009 with quarterly releases
thereafter. In February 2009, the Social Security Administration
will be the first agency to go live with the Gateway system, which
is expected to significantly reduce the time required to process
long-term disability claims for individuals - such as wounded
warriors - as they move through federal and private healthcare
systems. In 2009 the NHIN will move into limited production as
federal agencies and HIEs go operational on the NHIN. "The Gateway
system has the opportunity to transform nationwide health
information sharing by connecting a consortium of federal agencies
- and connecting the federal agencies to regional health
information exchanges," said Jim Traficant, vice president of
Harris Corporation's Healthcare Solutions. "The NHIN CONNECT will
enhance care and accelerate benefits for our wounded warriors,
veterans and their families with secure health information sharing
among federal agencies, and with access to vital medical records by
private sector providers delivering care for our service men and
women. The NHIN CONNECT is part of our commitment to delivering
enterprise intelligence to healthcare - the right information to
the right person, on the right device - at the point of care."
Harris teamed with partners Agilex Technologies, Inc., Sun
Microsystems, Inc., and Scenpro, Inc., to develop the NHIN CONNECT
Gateway's core services. Those services consist of software that
can be easily downloaded by providers to quickly enable connection
to the NHIN, and a software development kit that enables providers
to quickly develop customer interfaces to the NHIN. The NHIN
CONNECT Gateway also empowers patients by enabling them to
determine how and with whom their medical information is shared.
