Williams Cos. (WMB) on Tuesday said the Gateway Expansion Project has been placed into full service about 11 months ahead of schedule, to meet demand for natural gas.

The project expanded the existing Transco pipeline system, increasing the system's capacity by 65,000 dekatherms a day, enough to meet the needs of about 280,000 homes, Williams said.

The Transco system delivers natural gas to New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania and includes about 10,000 miles of pipeline between South Texas and New York City, the company said.

Williams said the project's scope included the installation of new motors at an existing compressor station and modifying or replacing some meter stations.

"The Gateway Expansion Project has been designed to minimize impacts to landowners and the environment by increasing the use of existing pipeline infrastructure," the company said.

Construction on the Gateway Expansion Project began in early 2019 and was originally expected to enter service in November 2020.
